Có người hỏi Đức Dalai Lama: “Điều gì làm Ngài ngạc nhiên nhất ở nhân loại?” Ngài trả lời: “Con người. Bởi vì con người phung phí sức khỏe để tích tiền của, rồi lại bỏ tiền ra để tìm mua lại sức khỏe. Và vì quá lo nghĩ cho tương lai, con người quên mất hiện tại, đến nỗi không sống với hiện tại lẫn tương lai. Con người sống như thể sẽ không bao giờ chết… Nhưng rồi sẽ chết như chưa từng sống bao giờ”.
Thùy Linh bấm Like cho status của một người bạn trên Facebook. Trong tâm trí cô hiện lên hình ảnh cha mình. Ông mất tích đã hơn hai năm trời. “Mất tích” hoặc là “bỏ đi”. Nhưng chẳng có lý gì để người cha tuyệt vời của cô bỗng dưng chạy ra khỏi cuộc sống của một gia đình hạnh phúc mẫu mực theo mệnh đề thứ hai. Vậy nên cô muốn mình luôn giữ được ý nghĩ rằng ông bị một thế lực đen tối nào đó bắt đi, y như câu chuyện trong bộ phim “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” do Hollywood sản xuất năm 2009.
Mất tích ngoài chủ ý sẽ ly kỳ và đầy rẫy nguy hiểm, nhưng như thế đồng nghĩa với việc cha có ở đâu chăng nữa vẫn luôn đặt gia đình, đặc biệt là cô trong trái tim. Thà nghĩ là như vậy, còn hơn tự hờn giận ông bỏ rơi mình và mẹ để tìm một cuộc sống khác, với một người khác – bồ nhí chẳng hạn.
Năm đó, một chiều cuối xuân, cha không trở về sau giờ tan sở. Bữa tối đã nguội ngắt mà tất cả điện thoại trong nhà vẫn không nhận được bất cứ cuộc gọi hoặc tin nhắn nào thông báo ông bận họp hay phải tiếp đón khách hàng khiến ông lỡ mất khoảng thời gian gia đình xum họp trong ngày. Cha vẫn luôn dạy rằng bữa ăn gia đình là vô cùng quý giá trong quá trình tạo dựng nhân cách cho một con người.
Chạy ngược thời gian trong vòng 5 năm, số lần cha đột xuất vắng mặt trong bữa cơm tối chỉ có thể đếm trên đầu ngón tay. Sự bất thường đó khiến Thùy Linh và mẹ bồn chồn hơn lửa đốt. Gọi điện đến cơ quan, trực ban thông báo ông đã đi từ lưng chiều. Gọi điện cho lái xe riêng, tài xế phân trần được sếp cho về sớm và bảo sẽ đi bằng taxi. Gọi điện đến tất cả những chỗ thân quen, không ai đã từng gặp ông trong ngày để có thể đưa ra một câu trả lời khả dĩ. Một người đàn ông vị thế sang trọng bỗng nhiên biến mất trong sự bình ổn. Như là bốc hơi, sạch tinh không ai hay biết. Và tất cả những công việc thường nhật của ông, nằm lại trong dang dở. Chuyện gia đình, chuyện tập đoàn, chuyện xã hội thiếu vắng ông một cách vội vàng đến mức ai cũng ngơ ngác không hiểu được.
Cha của Thùy Linh vốn là tổng giám đốc của Tập đoàn Dịch vụ Kỹ thuật Dầu khí Quốc gia. Không giống với hình ảnh những quan chức gian thâm chỉ lo tham nhũng sách nhiễu rồi nghĩ ngợi đến chuyên ban hành các nghị quyết vô lý phi thực, hay những đại gia bụng phệ thường bàn bạc đến khoản lợi nhuận kếch xù của mỗi thương vụ bên các em chân dài, ông là một người duy trì được tâm thế thanh cao, sạch sẽ trước mọi vấn nạn nội tại của xã hội đảo điên vì tiền, đạo lộn mọi mặt trong từng giá trị sống. Thường ngày ông vẫn trải qua những nhịp đời giản dị, như thể mình chỉ là một cá nhân vô cùng bình thường của cộng đồng. Thế nên dù cha có là Tổng giám đốc một tập đoàn lớn, thì Thùy Linh cũng không vin vào đó để nhiễm lối sống vênh vang hợm hĩnh. Cô kế thừa đức tính giản dị từ cha mình, một cách đầy tự hào cho nhân phẩm đang mất giá nháo nhào ngoài đời.
Nhiều người đã luôn tự hỏi tại sao một đấng quân tử, xuất thân hoàn toàn là dân đen như cha Thùy Linh lại có thể đạt được vị trí xã hội cao như vậy? Lẽ ra với sự trực tính, luôn để cái tâm đi trước mọi mưu mô, thì ông đã bị ngáng chân và xô ngã xuống mấy tầng đáy của xã hội rồi mới đúng. Vậy là xuất hiện vài lời đồn đãi, tự thân ông có một thứ bùa bả trời ban khiến bất cứ ai đối diện cũng dễ dàng phục tùng, để ông có thể thản nhiên bước lên cao mà không cần phải sử dụng bất cứ tâm kế hay thủ đoạn nào đạp người khác xuống cả. Trên đỉnh vinh quang chỉ có hai loại, một là anh hùng thực sự, hai là loài bò sát. Ông là loại thứ nhất. Thượng phẩm của xã hội. Như kiểu kim cương tự nhiên, rắn chắc và lấp lánh, khiến ai cũng tôn sùng.
Thế rồi, không hiểu vì điều gì mà viên đá quý giá đó biến mất. Cơ quan chức năng vào cuộc, dò xét lại từng li hành động của ông trước khi bốc hơi khỏi cuộc đời. Song họ không tìm được dấu hiệu bất thường để xâu chuỗi cho một kết luận chính xác từ những giả thuyết mơ hồ ban đầu. Cuối cùng cuộc tìm kiếm bỏ lửng sau hơn một năm các lực lượng an ninh tinh nhuệ của thành phố trổ hết tài năng. Một năm nữa qua đi, cha vẫn không hề xuất hiện, Thùy Linh tốt nghiệp đại học và trở thành giáo viên dạy Lịch sử cho một trường cấp 3 gần nhà, mẹ cô vẫn chuyên cần làm nhiệm vụ của bác sỹ huyết học tại bệnh viện Nhi trong thành phố. Hai mẹ con tiếp tục sống tốt như lúc cha vẫn còn và tin tưởng một ngày nào đó ông sẽ trở về. Bản thân ông trước giờ vẫn là một cá thể hoàn toàn khác biệt với nhóm “con người” trong triết pháp của Đức Dalai Lama, khi sự vắng mặt là thường hằng, thì ông vẫn hiện diện trong từng giây sự sống của những người có mối quan hệ mật thiết với mình. Dẫu sau này có phải gặp lại cha ở một thế giới khác, cô vẫn giữ trọn tình cảm tin yêu đó.
Là một giáo viên mới, ngay lập tức được các bậc tiền bối đánh giá: “còn non kinh nghiệm lắm”, Thùy Linh được phân giảng dạy khối lớp 10. Đó là một chương trình học sơ khai vừa rộng vừa dài trên diễn trình thời gian của toàn thế giới. Bắt đầu từ xã hội nguyên thủy với sự xuất hiện của loài người sống trong hình thái bầy đàn, tiến đến những nền văn minh cổ đại khi con người biết cách tổ chức nhà nước quản lý quốc gia để tiếp tục phân hóa với mức độ từng nhánh rễ theo thể chế hoặc vĩ mô hơn là chế độ ở thời trung và cận đại của nhân loại. Hóa ra những vấn đề to tát, xa xưa chưa thể kiểm chứng thì đều có thể truyền đạt một cách qua loa đại khái. Nhưng đối với Thùy Linh thì giáo trình mô tả loáng thoáng những bước đi dài của nhân loại thường được các giáo viên sử truyền đạt cho học trò theo cách tẻ nhạt đơn điệu lại chẳng khác gì một lỗ đen thu hút toàn bộ niềm say mê khoa học của cô.
Vốn không phải là một nhà khảo cổ học, nhưng cô thích sưu tầm tin tức về những cuộc khai quật được công bố trên thế giới, để dựa vào các dấu tích rời rạc từng bị vùi lấp dưới đất cát sỏi đá kết nối thành một mạch chuyện hợp lý với quá khứ. Cô muốn từ những mảnh ghép đó, phân luận và đưa ra các kiến giải mang cá tính của mình. Cô tin lịch sử nếu được kể bằng những câu chuyện hấp dẫn hơn, chắc hẳn đã không mai một quá nhiều, khiến đời sau cứ phải hồ nghi, tranh chấp.
Thói thường, một khi đã tranh, thì bên nào cũng muốn giành cho bằng được về phần mình. Nhân loại luẩn quẩn trong giới hạn của ý tứ triết luận giản đơn: Đấu tranh là động lực của sự phát triển. Dẫn đến thế giới càng tăng trưởng, những cuộc chiến tranh càng quy mô, thiệt hại càng to lớn, quyền lực càng tập trung, cường độ tái thiết càng cao và càng lộ rõ sự mất cân bằng, để rồi bắt đầu đổi thay bằng những cuộc đấu tranh rung chuyển đất trời theo một cấp độ mới. Xét cho cùng xã hội loài người đang ngày càng đi nhanh đến điểm gần cuối của chuỗi xoắn ốc với vô số tang thương, kèm xơ hóa nhân cảm dành cho cuộc đời.
Ngày 31 tháng 07 năm 2011, Thùy Linh tròn 24 tuổi. Đang giữa mùa hè, Hà Nội ban ngày nắng như muốn rang chín vạn vật, đêm đến không khí vẫn hầm hập oi nồng. Thời gian này Thùy Linh đang trong kỳ nghỉ hè, trường lớp học trò náo nhiệt lùi xa khỏi nhịp sống thường nhật. Cô ở rịt trong nhà, không muốn đi ra ngoài đường, để dồn tâm trí cho những cuốn sách nghiên cứu dày cộp và gắn chặt vào những trình duyệt web tìm kiếm thông tin.
“Chúc mừng sinh nhật cô! Tối nay em mời cô đi uống trà sữa mừng tuổi mới nhé!”, cậu học trò Thành Sơn nhắn tin kèm theo một biểu tượng mặt cười hiền hòa. Sao cậu bé không vào Sài Gòn thăm mẹ như kế hoạch đã kể cho cô nghe hôm tổng kết năm học mà vẫn còn ở thủ đô nhỉ? Thùy Linh hơi băn khoăn nhưng cảm thấy không cần thiết phải tìm hiểu lý do ngay lập tức nên nhắn lại: “Tối nay cô muốn ở nhà với mẹ. Nếu em không ngại thì ghé nhà chơi, mẹ cô sẽ đãi vài món ngon đấy!”. Cậu học trò trả lời ngay lập tức: “Em là con trai, làm sao mà e thẹn nổi cô ơi! 6h chiều em đến nhé!”, thực tế suốt năm học vừa qua cậu ấy vẫn luôn hồn nhiên thân tình như vậy. Mong là cậu bé không có cảm xúc gì vượt quá mối quan hệ cô trò, nếu không sẽ rất phiền phức, vì tối nay Hải Thủy – người yêu của Thùy Linh cũng sẽ đến.
Khi mặt trời đã rong chơi ở miền đất khác, Hải Thủy bước xuống từ một chiếc xe taxi mang theo bó hồng 25 bông sẫm đậm màu tình yêu. Trong túi anh là chiếc hộp nhỏ chứa một món quà xa xỉ mà đảm bảo không cô gái nào có thể từ chối. Hôm nay anh sẽ cầu hôn Thùy Linh, xin phép nhạc mẫu được tổ chức đám cưới vào mùa cuối năm, trước khi con gái bà lại chạm tuổi Kim Lâu. Hải Thủy hơn người yêu bốn tuổi, thuộc về tam hợp, nhưng không phải lý do này thúc đẩy anh kết hôn, mà quan trọng hơn anh thực sự thấy lòng mình rất yêu Thùy Linh và khao khát được sống chung dưới một mái nhà với cô.
Mới bước đến cửa, Hải Thủy khẽ cau mày khi thấy người yêu đang ngồi cạnh một câu trai mặt búng ra sữa trên chiếc sô pha dài màu nâu, cả hai cùng chăm chú vào chiếc ipad đọc gì đó. Anh lặng lẽ tiến vào với mục đích xem khi nào người yêu mới phát hiện ra mình đã đến, song chỉ được hơn một bước qua khỏi chiếc thảm lau chân, Thùy Linh đã ngẩng đầu lên với nụ cười hiền cố hữu dưới đôi mắt trong veo bình yên.
- Anh đến đúng giờ thế? Ngồi chơi với học sinh của em đi! Đây là anh Hải Thủy, còn đây là em Thành Sơn. Hai người làm quen nhé! Để em xuống bếp phụ mẹ dọn thức ăn lên.
Hải Thủy đặt bó hồng lên bàn, ngồi đối diện với Thành Sơn, giữ nét cười xã giao trên mặt và dùng đôi mắt nhiều tuổi đời của mình để đọc vị cậu học trò của người yêu. Anh cần kiểm tra ngầm xem giữa họ có gì khuất tất. Có đâu học trò lại thân thiết với cô giáo như thế, lại còn đến vào ngày sinh nhật giới hạn rất riêng tư như này nữa.
Thành Sơn có vẻ không thoải mái, cậu ta bấu những ngón chân xuống sàn gỗ, cào cào ngón tay trên tấm nệm da như một con mèo bối rối. Im lặng một lúc cuối cùng cậu ta cũng bắt chuyện:
- Anh là bạn như thế nào với cô Thùy Linh ạ?
- Giờ là người yêu, nhưng anh nghĩ vài tháng nữa sẽ là chồng của cô giáo em.
- Vậy… hai người đã đính hôn chưa ạ?
- Anh sẽ làm điều đó trong ngày hôm nay!
Câu trả lời gãy gọn của của Hải Thủy khiến Thành Sơn không biết nói gì tiếp theo. Cổ vũ hoặc ngăn chặn ư? Cậu thoáng cúi mặt rồi ngó lơ quanh quất trong gian phòng khách sáng trưng. Hải Thủy nhìn theo ánh mắt của Thành Sơn rồi bất chợt dừng ở bó hoa Phi Yến hai màu trắng tím được đặt mỹ miều trong chiếc hộp mi ca trong suốt, thắt dải dây nơ xanh lá điệu đà. Hẳn là quà của cậu trai này tặng cho Thùy Linh. Cậu ta nhọc tâm với người yêu mình đến thế sao? Hải Thủy cảm thấy một cơn giận âm thầm đang dâng lên trong lòng, đoạn yết hầu biểu hiện khô ráp kìm nén.
Hoa phi yến tượng trưng cho những người sinh vào tháng bảy. Theo một một kiểu bói toán khái quát lưu truyền trên mạng, nó ca ngợi những người sinh tháng bảy nhanh nhẹn, sở hữu trái tim luôn rộng mở và rất mạnh mẽ. Ngoài ra người đó có khả năng suy xét vấn đề tốt, nhìn cuộc sống rất lạ và hay tưởng tượng, nên có khi người khác sẽ cảm thấy họ hơi lập dị. Những đức tính được mô tả này, Hải Thủy thấy đúng với con người Thùy Linh. Phi Yến cũng mềm mại thanh thoát giống như dáng vẻ bề ngoài của người con gái anh yêu, nhưng mãi mãi anh vẫn không thích được loài hoa ấy. Nó nhắc anh về một đoạn tuổi thơ đầy những uất ức hoảng loạn và đen tối. Tất nhiên anh không hé lộ một cách chi tiết, chỉ nêu đại khái hoa phi yến chứa đầy độc tố, người Hy Lạp đã từng dùng nó làm thuốc trừ sâu vào thời Pharaon cổ xưa. Hoa độc, thì dù có đẹp mấy cũng không nên gần gũi, huống chi là yêu thích.
Nhưng hôm nay là một ngày quan trọng, Hải Thủy không thể bộc lộ sự thất thố vì vài cành hoa phi yến được, anh cố gắng giữ mọi tức giận ở sâu trong lòng. Hải Thủy kiếm chuyện để nối lại sự giao tiếp ngắn ngủn vừa qua:
- Hồi nãy hai cô trò xem gì vậy?
- Vụ biểu tình sáng nay ạ! – Thành Sơn níu đôi mắt lơ đễnh quay về nhìn thẳng vào người đàn ông ngồi đối diện.
- Biển Đông! Biển Đông! – Hải Thủy chậm rãi nhắc nhấn từng từ, giọng điệu lộ ra chút giễu cợt – Tụ tập lẻ tẻ như thế liệu có thay đổi được cục diện…
- Em nghĩ góp gió thành bão anh à!
- Nghe vậy anh đoán là em có tham gia?
- Trừ buổi đầu tiên, từ đó đến nay chủ nhật nào em cũng đi.
- Có gì thú vị nhỉ?
- Phải trực tiếp đi cùng đoàn người anh mới cảm nhận được không khí ở đó. Hồi nãy em rủ cô Thùy Linh chủ nhật tuần sau cùng đi biểu tình, mà cô nói sẽ suy nghĩ và trả lời em sau.
- Anh không ủng hộ người yêu mình tham gia vào hoạt động đó. Em cũng nên nghĩ thân thế của một giáo viên hoàn toàn khác với một học sinh. Nếu quý mến cô giáo, lẽ ra em không nên lôi kéo vào những chống đối tự phát như thế!
- Em không nghĩ thế – bất ngờ giọng Thùy Linh vang lên từ phía sau lưng Hải Thủy – Chủ nhật tới em sẽ tham gia đoàn tuần hành cùng Thành Sơn.
Câu trả lời bình thản không kèm theo thách thức hay cố chấp trong ngữ điệu của Thùy Linh khiến Hải Thủy chưng hửng khi đang thuyết giảng những kiến luận xã hội, còn Thành Sơn thì vui ra mặt, cậu ta hồ hởi xác lập thời gian và điểm hẹn với cô giáo vào tuần sau. Phút chốc cơn uất nghẹn âm thầm ập đến, kéo theo nỗi bực dọc về bó hoa phi yến như muốn xé tan những cam chịu của Hải Thủy. Anh thực sự muốn nổ tung thành ngàn cơn sóng giận dữ, dâng cao và nhấn chìm những con người đang hiện diện trong tầm mắt mình.

Bề mặt trái đất, sự sống tồn tại đã được khoảng một tỷ năm. Dựa trên những cứ liệu khảo cổ tìm được, Nhân Loại hiện đại dự đoán lớp người thượng cổ đầu tiên xuất hiện cách hai triệu năm trước. Sau một quá trình dài tiến hóa và phân hóa với những biến cố tự nhiên, Nhân Loại tự thu mình vào những cục diện khác nhau có sự phân tầng rõ rệt, để rồi trong cái lõi của những cộng đồng hùng mạnh sản sinh những tập hợp cá thể giàu tham vọng quyền lực, không ngừng dùng chiến tranh xâm lược những cộng đồng yếm thế để mơ tái thiết thế giới theo ý mình. Từ những năm cận đại trở lại gần đây, các cuộc chiến với quy mô lớn càng trở nên dày đặc trong khi phần đông Nhân Loại đều mơ ước hòa bình, phồn thịnh.
Tuy nhiên người trên mặt đất là một giống loài dồi dào tình cảm, họ dễ đánh mất lý trí trước hàng loạt thứ cảm xúc bùng phát từ những lỗ đen rất nhỏ nơi tâm hồn. Có lẽ vì thế họ phát triển song song với sự tàn phá và yêu thương luôn đồng hành cùng thù hận.
Năm 2011 là thời khắc u ám của thế giới Nhân Loại, trật tự đa cực bấp bênh khi sự tách biệt giữa yếu tố địa chính trị và địa kinh tế của các cường quốc thay đổi tính ưu thế. Đặc biệt cuộc khủng hoảng kinh tế thế giới ở diện sâu rộng đã liên tục ảnh hưởng đến các mối quan hệ quốc tế. Cạnh tranh gay gắt, thậm chí là xói mòn mọi hữu nghị đã cố công gầy dựng trước đó dẫn đến an ninh quân sự ngầm hình thành những cấu trúc mới dưới bề mặt chìm rất khó đoán định. Mặt khác Nhân Loại phải đối mặt với vấn đề biến đổi khí hậu theo chiều hướng xấu khiến thiên tai, thảm họa gia tăng ngoài khả năng dự báo.
Điểm nóng Biển Đông, chỉ là một lát cắt mỏng trong sự biến động hỗn loại của thế giới, nhưng có thể xem như một thấu kính hội tụ hầu hết các tính chất lộ thiên hoặc tiềm ẩn bên trong Nhân Loại.
