Những cơn mưa ngày, những cơn mưa đêm…trút xuống mặt đất những giọt nước mát lạnh, gieo rắc trong mỗi người một nỗi buồn man mác…Nếu ngày ấy không có nhiều mưa, có lẽ quá khứ đã không buồn đến não ruột…Cho những ngày mưa và những nỗi buồn không thể gọi tên.
Truyện :
Cơn mưa dầm dề dai dẳng từ lúc trời chưa sáng, mặt sông cứ lấm tấm những hạt mưa, dập dềnh như tấm vải hoa màu vàng óng. Trong căn nhà lá sát mé sông bãi cồn cát, hai đứa trẻ một lớn, một nhỏ ngồi run rẩy theo từng đợt gió.
Phả hơi ấm vào lòng bàn tay, chà hai bàn tay với nhau đứa nhỏ chỉ lên những tòa nhà cao cao phía bên kia sông.
_ Mấy căn nhà đó ở trỏng chắc ấm lắm hen hai?
_ Uh!
Con bé chỉ ậm ừ trong cổ họng. Bàn tay bé xíu vẫn thoăn thoắt lên chiếc nón lá đang dở dang.
_ Phải chi cha còn sống hen hai?
Đôi mắt con bé trờ nên sâu hơn, nó không trả lời đứa em, chỉ cúi mặt xuống thấp hơn một chút để đứa em không nhìn thấy. Đứa em trai vẫn thả những cái nhìn về phía những tòa nhà và mặt sông đang mưa lất phất, gương mặt ngây ngô đến tội.
_ Má hổng thương hai chị em mình hả hai? Sao má đi lâu quá hông thấy dìa? Em nhớ má quá!
Một giọt nước trong suốt ấm hơn giọt nước mưa rơi độp lên cái nón lá dở dang. Trong bộ óc non nớt của con bé mười tuổi thoắt hiện lên hình ảnh cái đêm nó bắt gặp má nó ngồi cười khúc khích với thằng cha chủ ghe lúa gạo. Tối bữa đó má không về nữa, nó ngồi ngoài hàng ba chờ má tới sáng, tối đó trời cũng mưa hệt như vầy.
_ Em xin lỗi hai! Tại….Em nhớ má quá!
Đôi tay nhỏ bé gạt những giọt nước mắt lăn dài trên gương mặt nhỏ chị. Từ hai kẽ mắt bé xíu cũng chảy ra hai giọt nước trong suốt….
_ Không được khóc! Con trai khóc nhè là xấu lắm! Bữa nay đám dỗ cha, hai đi chợ mua trứng cá dìa cho út ăn nghen! Hông được khóc nữa! Lỡ cha dìa thăm, cha thấy cha hổng vui! Nín đi! Vô lấy cho hai cái áo mưa.
Bận cái áo mưa dã chiến bằng bọc nylon tự chế, con bé nhóng cổ gọi với qua bên ghe của má bảy.
_ Má bảy ơi! Cho con mượn ghe đi chợ chút xíu nghen!
_ Con Lụa đó hả bay? Sao bữa nay đi chợ sớm dữ vậy? Chờ chút để bảy kêu thằng Cần đem qua cho!
Gọi là má cho thân chứ thực ra có bà con thân thích gì đâu? Tại chị em nó thương má bảy như thương má nó nên mới gọi bằng má.
Cái bóng lọm khọm của má bảy khuất sau tấm bạt trước nóc ghe.
_ Hai đứa ở nhà chơi nghen! Đừng có lội xuống nước, lạnh lắm! Vọp bẻ ạ! Hai đi chợ xíu hai dìa liền!
Cái áo mưa phần phật theo từng nhịp chèo xa dần. Chỉ còn lại hai đứa trẻ, một đứa thì câm điếc từ nhỏ chỉ biết ú ớ với mấy cái kí hiệu mà người thân với nó mới hiểu nó nói gì. Còn một đứa thì cả ngày chỉ nói được mấy câu, xem ra cũng chẳng khác nhau là mấy. Vậy mà hai đứa nhỏ thân nhau lạ lùng, hai cặp mắt ngây ngô cứ nhìn những cánh bông bần trôi bập bềnh trên mặt nước, thỉnh thoảng lôi cần câu lên gỡ con cá xấu số vừa cắn mồi, mỗi lần câu được một con là thằng Cần lại nhe hàm răng sún cười toe toét.
Chắc ông trời cũng có mắt nên mới cho hai chị em nó gặp được má bảy với thằng Cần. Phải chăng những mảnh đời trái ngang mới hiểu và cảm thông được cho nhau? Má Bảy hồi đó ở trên bờ chứ có lang thang vầy đâu?
Nghe đâu hồi đó má Bảy làm công cho gia đình ông xã trưởng trong bờ. Lỡ làm mất bộ lư đồng, sợ ông trưởng bắt tội nên lầm lũi bỏ đi. Rồi gặp được ông Bảy cho trốn nhờ trên ghe, ở nhờ rồi đâm ra thương nên ở thiệt, tưởng đã yên thân, dè đâu mới làm cơm ra mắt ông bà chừng gần tuần lễ chưa tròn 7 con nước, ông Bảy đi cào cá bị điện giật chết. Má bảy ở vậy không đi bước nữa, cho tới bữa vô tình neo ghe lại trên đám bần trú gió bão, thấy có chiếc ghe trôi lờ đờ trên mặt sông, trên ghe là đứa nhỏ còn đỏ hỏn khóc đến khản tiếng. Lúc đó má Bảy vui biết chừng nào, vì má chỉ mong có được một mụn con nên đặt tên cho thằng nhỏ là Cần có nghĩa là cần thiết. Nuôi tới ba bốn tuổi mà thằng nhỏ không nói được mới biết nó bị câm, má Bảy thương thằng Cần vô kể.
Được cái thằng nhỏ cũng mạnh khỏe, ăn cơm toàn rau muốn luộc với cá lòng tong vậy mà chắc da chắc thịt không thua gì mấy đứa trên bờ. Tuần sáu lần hai má con chống ghe đi chài cá, có bữa nhiều bán lấy tiền mua gạo ăn cả tuần chưa hết.
Bữa vô tình hai má con đi chài cá ngang qua nhà Hai chị em Lụa thấy hai đứa ngồi ôm nhau khóc, hỏi ra mới biết nhà hết gạo mà không còn tiền mua, hai chị em đói quá nên mới khóc. Má Bảy thấy thương quá nên quyết định đậu lại đây lâu, nhỏ Lụa mừng riết ôm má nhảy tưng tưng.
Ngày qua ngày ba đứa nhỏ lớn lên nhiêu thì nếp nhăn trên trán má Bảy nhiều bi nhiêu. Quay qua quay lại tụi nó xắp thành nam thanh nữ tú ráo trọi. Tội nghiệp thằng Út Châu! Mê chữ mà không có tiền đi học mỗi ngày chèo xuồng vô bờ đứng ké ngoài hàng lang học lỏm, tối dìa lấy ngón tay làm viết chấm nước viết lên sàn nhà…Con Lụa thấy em ngồi viết mà nước mắt ròng ròng.
Bữa con Lụa có kinh lần đầu tiên, khóc mếu máu chạy qua ghe má Bảy.
_ Má Bảy ơi! Chắc con xắp chết…..Nếu con có chuyện gì, má Bảy lo cho thằng Châu nghen má bảy…Con đội ơn má Bảy suốt đời….!
Bà Bảy tưởng chuyện gì, hết hồn, hỏi ra mới biết nó nói nó bị chảy máu hoài….Không cầm được. Bà bảy rớt nước mắt.
_ Tổ cha bây! Làm hết hồn hà! Nói tầm bậy! Bay xắp thành thiếu nữ rồi chứ chết chóc gì?
Người ngoài cồn cát đã ít, con gái ngoài cồn cát còn ít hơn.Nhỏ Lụa mười bảy tuổi trổ mả như xanh rì như mạ non. Làm mấy thằng đi ghe dư cơm thiếu gái cứ nập nợn ngoài cửa. Bữa chuẩn bị chở má Bảy đi chợ chiều mua ít nhang đèn cúng nhà mới lợp, Lụa bận áo bà ba tím má Bảy chắc lưỡi khen hoài.
_ Đẹp chi dữ vậy bay?
Thằng Út Châu bể tiếng giọng ồm ồm cũng reo tướng lên:
_ Bữa nay chị hai đẹp quá…..Giống hệt….!
Thằng Cần theo lời má Bảy nhanh tay bụm miệng nó lại, nếu không chắc nó đã hét tướng lên : “Giống má quá!”
Tối ngồi dạy thằng Cần viết chữ, Châu ngóng hoài không thấy hai với má Bảy dìa, tới lúc trời tối thui hai đứa mới đi ra đi vô nóng ruột không học được nữa. Một chiếc tàu buôn cặp lại gần nhà, nhỏ Lụa khoác cái mền bông, đầu tóc bù xù, ướt mem, cái áo bà ba tím rách tả tơi mặt cắt không còn hột máu.
Thằng Cần nhìn giáo giác kiếm má Bảy, anh Thắng chủ ghe lật cái mền thứ hai trên ghe lên, má bảy nằm đó không chút hơi thở. Thằng cần nhào lên ôm xác má Bảy lay lay ú ớ gọi, nước mắt nước mũi lòng thòng…
Út Châu quay qua hỏi nhỏ Lụa, nó không nhận được gì ngoài sự im lặng, nhỏ Lụa chạy thẳng vô nhà nằm trên dạt tre trùm mền kín mít, nước mắt cứ vậy tuôn ra, không còn nấc lên thành tiếng được nữa.
Anh Thắng chủ ghe buôn, người đã cứu nhỏ Lụa khỏi đám thèm khát dục vọng đến điên cuồng kể lại lúc đi qua thấy Lụa đang vùng vẫy trong đám đàn ông hừng hực cơn cuồng tình, mắt cứ nhìn xuống dòng sông gọi má bảy riết. Cánh tay mạnh mẽ của thắng không thể chịu nổi trước cảnh chướng tai gai mắt nên giờ mới có mặt ở đây. Nhỏ Lụa thì không sao, chỉ tội cho má Bảy bảo vệ đứa con gái ngang hông mà bị bọn côn đồ chấn nước cho tới chết.
Ngày đám tang má bảy cũng là một ngày mưa…Mưa từ ngày này qua ngày khác. Mùi xác cháy khét lẹt tỏa trong gió cho tới giờ hốc mũi tụi nó cũng còn ngai ngái mùi. Bữa đi rải cốt má Bảy xuống sông thằng Cần như người mất hồn, hai mắt xưng bụp ngồi ôm tấm hình má bảy nhìn đăm đăm xuống nước không khóc được, sau bữa đó số phận của ba đứa như có một mối ràng buộc gì đó thật lạ kì, cứ dính chặt lấy nhau.
Nhiều đêm không ngủ được thằng Út Châu nằm gác tay lên trán tự hỏi “ Sao tụi nó khổ quá dậy?”. Rồi cuối cùng cũng không tự trả lời được, trong đầu nó tự nhiên một quyết tâm vượt lên cái nghèo, cái khổ trỗi dậy mạnh mẽ. Nó lẩm nhẩm câu nói mà có lần nó học lóm được ở lớp học “Ai giàu ba họ, ai khó ba đời?”. Cái quyết tâm đơn dản vậy mà giúp nó có nghị lực biết bao nhiêu, tháng ngày trôi qua…..Tụi nó lớn lên cùi cụi như bóng mặt trời.
Hai thằng nhóc ngày nào giờ đã thành hai thanh niên cường tráng làn da ngăm rám nắng,hai đứa con của miền sông nước phù sa. Mỗi sáng hai đứa lại rong ruổi trên chiếc xuồng đi kéo cá nuôi sống cả ba miệng ăn. Nón lá của nhỏ Lụa cũng ngày càng được nhiều con buôn để mắt tới, giờ nó chỉ cần ở nhà trầm nón lo cơm nước ngày hai bữa và giữ tiền dành dụm cho hai đứa em…
Một sáng trời cũng mưa nhiều như hồi đó…Nhỏ Lụa nước mắt hai hàng theo chồng, chồng nó có xa lạ chi đâu? Anh Thắng chủ tàu buôn hồi đó cứu nó khỏi đám quỉ yêu râu xanh kia chứ đâu. Cách có một can sông mà nó khóc ròng, làm thằng Út Châu với thằng Cần mắt cũng rơm rớm nước.
Tối bữa đó thằng Út Châu chui xuống ghe ngủ với thằng Cần cho đỡ nhớ chị. Nửa đêm nó giựt mình , có ai đó đang hôn lên gò má nó, mở mắt ra….Trong ánh sáng của ngọn đèn dầu tù mù, nó thấy thằng Cần, rõ ràng là thằng cần chứ không phải ai khác….Có ai dạy nó đâu? Sao tự nhiên nó biết làm ba cái trò này? Nó viết lên không khí chứ Châu rồi chỉ vào ngực trái. Có nghĩa là nó yêu Châu….Thằng Châu bất ngờ đến không nói được câu nào. Tự dưng chân tay mềm ụp ra. Giữa khuya hai đứa hừng hực như hai ngọn lửa trong bếp lò nhỏ Lụa vẫn hay nấu cơm. Vậy là từ lúc đó nó biết cuộc đời nó với thằng Cần đã rẽ sang một hướng mới, nó hôn nhẹ lên trán thằng Cần, hình ảnh thằng nhóc sún răng hồi nào chạy qua trong óc. Ngoài kia mưa lại bắt đầu rơi….Trong đầu nó dự định còn nhiều hơn những giọt mưa đang rơi ở ngoài….

Một năm sống trên bờ làm cho cả nó với thằng Cần nhớ cái miệt Cồn Cát ghê ghớm,….Cồn cát trở thành khu dự án du lịch…Nhà nó bị giải tỏa…..Bằng số tiền bồi thường ít ói cộng với tiền dành dụm bấy lâu của ba chị em nó, nó với thằng Cần mở một cái xưởng đóng tàu nhỏ trên này. Tối ngày hai đứa bận túi bụi, nhiều lúc nhớ Cồn cát hai đứa ra ngoài bờ sông ngồi ngâm chân xuống nước để cá rỉa chơi cho đỡ nhớ…
_ Nhanh thiệt! Mới đó mà gần năm trời rồi há Cần!
Thằng Cần không biết có hiểu hay không, gật đầu lia lịa, cười….y như hồi còn nhỏ.
Sáng đẹp trời, chiếc tàu mới xuất xưởng. Một phụ nữ trẻ ẵm một đứa bé trai kháu khỉnh cặp tay chồng bước lên bờ.
_ Út !, Cần!
Hai gương mặt sáng rỡ, Nhỏ Lụa chớ ai.
_ Chèn đét ơi! Hai dìa chơi sao không cho hay trước?
_ Tại thằng Hy lên Sài Gòn cứ than nhớ cậu út với cậu Cần hoài!
Căn nhà gỗ cặp mé sông tràn ngập tiếng cười của trẻ con. Nén nhang khói um sùm trên bàn thờ má Bảy. Thằng Út Châu gọi khẽ.
_ Hai ơi! Ai đi trong mưa….Giống má quá!
Bóng áo bà ba tím khuất dạng dưới cơn mưa…
Mặt sông vẫn như hồi nào lấm tấm như tấm lụa vàng, bông bần nổi trắng xóa….
Thằng Cần tự dưng bập bẹ.
_ Bưa….bưa…!
Một đôi mắt lại đầy nước,…. Đầy như những ngày mưa…..
