Năm tôi học lớp bốn, thầy giáo ra đề văn: “Kể về một việc tốt em đã làm”. Bài tôi nộp không có gì xuất sắc, nhưng cũng được thầy khen và đọc cho cả lớp nghe, vì việc dập đám lửa nhỏ sắp lan vào bãi cỏ tranh giữa mùa khô đã ngăn được một vụ cháy rừng ít nhiều có ý nghĩa, dù thời đó nhận thức về môi trường bị tàn phá chưa nặng thành vấn nạn như bây giờ.
Sau một số bài khen, thầy bắt đầu đọc đến những bài văn không thể hiểu nổi của vài trò khác. Bài văn cuối cùng thầy đọc là một câu chuyện thế này: “Nhà em ở gần một con suối. Hàng ngày em và các bạn thường ra suối tắm. Có những bạn nghịch ngợm trèo lên mỏm đá cao nhảy xuống chỗ nước sâu. Em khuyên các bạn không nên làm thế vì nó rất nguy hiểm, dễ bị chết đuối. Một hôm có một bạn nhảy xuống và bị chuột rút. Em ở gần đấy nên đã bơi ra cứu. Dù bị rong quấn chặt vào chân nhưng em cũng đưa được bạn ấy lên bờ, và em chết…”. Thầy giáo đọc đến đấy thì ngừng lại và nhăn mặt hỏi chủ nhân của bài viết: “Thầy không hiểu nổi, nếu em chết thì làm sao em ngồi ở lớp học này kể lại chuyện được?”. Cả lớp ồ lên cười. Trò ấy khoanh tay bẽn lẽn trả lời: “Dạ thưa thầy, em viết thiếu chữ bạn ạ!”.
Nhưng từ lúc đó tôi bỗng nghĩ nhiều hơn về cái chết, về việc một người không còn trên cõi đời.
Khi tôi 5 tuổi, dì họ của tôi lấy chồng. Dì tên Duyên, vừa chớm hai mươi, làm công nhân trong một xưởng chế biến chè ở Lâm Hà. Mẹ và tôi đón xe đò từ Bảo Lộc lên dự đám cưới trước một ngày. Trong căn phòng gỗ cấp bốn nhỏ hẹp của xí nghiệp cấp, tôi cảm giác như găp dì lần đầu tiên. Khi ấy dì ngồi trát cặn nước vo gạo lên mặt, nửa tiếng sau rửa sạch và dùng sợi chỉ xe đi xe lại cho khít lỗ chân lông. Da dì trở nên trắng thín nhẵn bóng, đôi lông mày cũng được tỉa mỏng leo lét. Dì làm đẹp để ngày mai trở thành cô dâu tươi xinh trong lễ vu quy. Mẹ cứ nắm tay dì bịn rịn: “Mong em hạnh phúc, đừng lận đận như chị nhé!”
Nửa năm sau, mẹ lại tất tả dẫn tôi ra vẫy xe đò lên chỗ của dì. Vẫn đông người như đám cưới thủa nào, nhưng dì nằm trong quan tài bên cạnh chiếc bàn thờ thắp đầy đèn dầu và nghi ngút khói nhang. Anh trai của dì – người tôi gọi là cậu Kiên rất thân thiết khóc ngặt nghẽo trước thể xác vô hồn của em gái. Tôi nhỏ tuổi nên còn quá thấp để có thể nhón chân lên nhìn vào quan tài xem dung mạo dì khi chết thế nào. Chỉ nhớ người đến viếng nói dì treo cổ tự tử vì lấy phải gã chồng chẳng ra gì. Gã đó hay đánh dì để lấy tiền thảy vào cờ bạc. Lần cuối, dì ra tối hậu thư: “Anh mà đi nữa tôi sẽ chết cho anh xem!”, nhưng gã chồng vẫn lao ra khỏi cửa. Đến khi nhẵn túi quay trở về thì xác vợ đã lạnh cứng dưới sợi thừng nối vào xà nhà.
Lúc hạ huyệt, cậu tôi gào khóc thảm thiết lẫn trong những nắm đất vụn. Cậu như muốn lao vào mộ cùng em gái khi chiếc quan tài được thả xuống. Một nhóm đông người lớn xúm vào mới giữ được cậu mấp mé bên miệng hố. Cậu cứ quằn quại trách em gái dại khờ, buồn khổ gì thì còn có anh trai, cớ gì giận chồng mà đánh đổi bằng cả sinh mạng? Xét cho cùng, dì chỉ mới hai mươi.
Đến khi nấm đất được những người dự đám tang chung tay đắp lên và mặt trời biến mất sau bóng núi, cậu tôi vẫn không chịu về mà cứ ngồi sụt sùi vì làn hơi đã cạn kiệt của mình. Mẹ phải dỗ dành mãi mới kéo được cậu đứng dậy, lúc đó sương đêm đã làm ướt vai của tất cả những con người đang ủ dột dưới gầm trời. Ở vùng kinh tế mới trên cao nguyên Langbiang này, mẹ chỉ có dì Duyên và cậu Kiên là họ hàng thân thích. Vậy mà đã vĩnh viễn mất đi một người.

Nhà tôi ở đầu đèo Bảo Lộc, ngay sát mặt quốc lộ. Phía trước núi rừng trùng điệp, phía sau vực sâu um tùm. Nguyên cả khu là một dãy dài nhà cửa toàn dân tứ xứ tụ tập về khai phá sản vật của rừng, hoặc trồng cấy hoa màu trên những triền đồi thoai thoải. Ngày ngày người lớn nai nịt ra khỏi nhà và biến mất vào trong màu xanh rừng từ sáng sớm, tối trời đen kịt mới trở về. Trẻ con được giao nhiệm vụ trông nhà rỗi việc nên lập thành nhóm và chơi đùa cho qua ngày, đợi cứng cáp hơn là đưa tay ta phụ việc cho cha mẹ. Nhóm trẻ dưới mười tuổi chúng tôi hay chơi trò xây lâu dài bằng đá bên vệ đường hoặc cắm trại với cỏ hôi. Lặp đi lặp lại không chán.
Khi tôi 6 tuổi, một cảnh tượng chết chóc đã diễn ra vào giữa buổi sáng trời cao trong vắt. Như thường lệ cả đám trẻ có bố mẹ đi vắng tụ tập bên vệ đường bày trò chơi. Thằng bé tên Phong nhà trên đụn đất ở phía đối diện kém tôi 2 tuổi cũng lũn tũn chạy xuống nhập hội. Sau khi chán chơi trò đồ hàng đầy nữ tính đám trẻ rủ nhau băng qua đường để tìm chặt những cành cây lớn dựng trại. Phong nhỏ nhất nên lễ mễ bám đuôi. Đột nhiên một chiếc tải lao vọt lên từ con dốc, ngang qua chúng tôi rồi thắng két lại. Cả đám quay lại nhìn thì thấy cậu nhóc Phong nằm bất tỉnh trên đường, máu đỏ loang trên mảng nhựa xám đen. Người lái xe hạ kính và thò đầu ra ngó láo liên, rồi dường như không thấy có bất cứ người lớn nào quanh đó nên lao vội xe đi. Chúng tôi đứng bất động một lúc vì ngỡ ngàng, cho tới khi một chiếc xe đò lèn chặt khách ngang qua và túa xuống xem xét sự tình. Những đứa lớn lao về phía Phong nằm, tôi thì cứ nguyên ở một chỗ nhìn trân trối vào đám đông, nhớ lại chuyện những chiếc xe từng cán chết gà, vịt, thậm chí cả chó nhà mình trước đây cũng đã thản nhiên lái xe bỏ đi như thế.
Sáng hôm sau tôi theo chân anh hai của mình vào nhà Phong. Trên gương mặt trắng bệch và tay chân nhợt nhạt của cậu bé đầy những vết xây xát tím đen sau khi được cha mẹ lau sạch mọi vết máu. Mẹ Phong ôm thân thể của con trai khóc dấm dứt, rồi lấy chiếc áo len nhiều màu rộng thùng thình mặc cho cái xác bé nhỏ lạnh cứng, bà xắn đi xắn lại tay áo cho vừa vặn với với đôi tay nhỏ xíu của con mình. Có lẽ đó là chiếc áo đẹp nhất của dương gian được Phong mang về thế giới bên kia.

Ở chốn rừng thiêng nước độc, song tôi chưa bao giờ chứng kiến bất cứ ai chết vì rắn cắn, hay gấu táp, hổ vồ. Chỉ thấy lâu lâu vài con thú rừng dữ tợn trở thành món ăn thơm phức trên bàn do những người hàng xóm có súng săn thiện nghệ hảo tâm đem biếu. Hóa ra nơi đầy ắp những câu chuyện linh ảo kỳ dị này, người ta đều chết bởi lòng người, bởi những điều mà trẻ con không thể nào hiểu nổi.
Một năm sau cái chết của Phong, chị Loan ở cách nhà tôi hai căn cũng từ giã cuộc sống bằng thuốc trừ sâu khi chưa tròn 18 tuổi. Chị ấy yêu một anh nào đó nhưng bị bố mẹ ngăn cấm, bắt phải cưới một gã buôn gỗ hợm hĩnh. Buổi sáng hôm ấy, khi sương vừa tan trên muôn vạn nhánh lá, mặt trời lên chiếu xiên cái bóng bằng đúng chiều cao cơ thể, tôi và mấy đứa trẻ đang hái những lá rau tàu bay về bày đồ hàng thì nhìn thấy người ta cõng chị Loan ra từ đồi chè. Mặt chị ấy tím tái, mắt trợn trừng, môi thâm đen và phun bọt trắng nhởn ra hai bên mép. Cơ thể chị ấy co giật dữ dội dính đầy xác cỏ và bùn đất. Một chiếc xe nhanh chóng được gọi đến để đưa chị ấy vào bệnh viện cấp cứu, nhưng đến giữa trưa tôi nghe nói chị ấy đã tắt thở ngay trên đường đi. Suốt những ngày sau đó cả khu dân cư râm ran xét đoán chuyện gia đình chị Loan. Người ta cứ tự hỏi bố mẹ chị ấy sẽ hối tiếc bao lâu khi còn nhớ đến cái chết của con gái mình.

Dường như những câu chuyện về chết chóc không bao giờ dừng lại ở vùng đất mẹ con tôi định cư.
Ngày hôm qua chú hàng xóm tìm thấy một bộ xương khô trắng bên bờ suối vắng, khi đi sâu vào rừng săn thú lớn. Thời gian đã xóa hết dấu vết để có thể đoán định về nhân thân người chết, nên chú đành đào một hố đất chôn xuống rồi trở về nhà. Lòng cố gạt đi những ý nghĩ xui rủi mà nghĩ rằng vong hồn người chết có thể sẽ phù trợ cho mình.
Ngày hôm nay người ta phát hiện xác một phụ nữ trẻ bị ném dưới vực mà không hề có một mảnh vải che chắn. Dân cư hiếu kỳ đến xem như kiến, người này người kia truyền tai phỏng đoán nạn nhân là dân thành phố bị hãm hiếp và hung thủ chở xác đến ném xuống vực thủ tiêu. Cơ quan chức năng xuất hiện, dựng hiện trường khám nghiệm rồi cuối cùng cũng tan, để lại một nấm đất nhỏ bên bờ dốc cùi chỏ gấp khúc. Cánh lái xe ngang qua lập miếu thờ cầu may rồi không ngừng đồn đại linh hồn cô gái xấu số đó đã hóa thánh thần.
Một thời gian ngắn sau đó, hai người đàn ông trên thị xã xuống thu mua lá dâu bị giết chết dưới chân đèo trong đêm. Sáng sớm người đi rừng tìm thấy xác và những bao dâu bị quăng dưới vực, còn hai chiếc xe máy biến mất không tăm hơi. Công an lao vào điều tra, cả năm sau mới bắt được hung thủ là nhóm tội phạm đang tản mát dưới Sài Gòn.
Thần chết có vẻ như ở rất gần, luôn sẵn sàng vung lưỡi hái xuống bất kỳ sinh mạng nào, nhưng lạ thay chứng kiến nhiều cái chết thương tâm như vậy mà tôi vẫn chưa bao giờ nghĩ mình hay những người thân ruột thịt sẽ ra đi vào một ngày gần gũi.
Năm tôi lên 8 tuổi, bỗng đâu người cha ở chốn thị thành tìm đến và đón anh hai đi giữa mùa tựu trường. Mẹ đồng ý cho anh hai tôi theo người đàn ông đó về thành phố vì mong ước con mình được học hành tử tế hơn. Ngày tháng dắt díu nhau đi, hết năm là xuân đến và tết qua. Khi những xác pháo còn nhuộm hồng mọi khoảnh sân trước mỗi căn nhà tạm bợ ở khu tôi sống, thì mẹ nói với tôi anh hai đã chết. “Anh đã đi rất xa, vĩnh viễn không được gặp lại nữa rồi con ơi!”. Tôi tiếp nhận tin đó bằng một cơn khóc òa không rõ đau buồn ở mức nào. Trống rỗng! Bởi lúc anh trút hơi thở cuối cùng, buông tay với kiếp sống trọ gian truân nơi trần gian, tôi vắng mặt. Giây phút người ta thả anh xuống sâu ba thước đất để chìm vào trạng thái im lìm, tôi cũng không hề có mặt. Thứ tôi được nhìn thấy chỉ là bàn thờ gỗ lộ những nhát cưa sần sùi chất đầy hương hoa và một ngôi mộ đã xây cứng đét, quét vôi ve xanh đỏ lọt thỏm trong trùng điệp mồ mả dưới chốn Sài thành xa lạ.
Mẹ chìm ngập trong tưởng nhớ về con trai và nỗi oán hận người đàn ông đã từng là chồng mình. Nếu không để cho anh hai đi theo ông ta, sống trong ngôi nhà có người bố lơ là ngay cả khi con mình bị bệnh, thì cậu bé mười tuổi khỏe mạnh, thông minh đã không bị chết vì viêm phổi cấp biến chứng từ cơn cảm mạo nhỏ vặt. Mẹ không bao giờ tha thứ được cho ông ta, và tôi cũng vậy. Mãi mãi không tha thứ. Dẫu cho tôi còn quá khờ dại để cảm nhận nỗi đau mất đi người thân, nhưng cái chết của một ai đó có chung khúc ruột với mình sẽ vĩnh viễn không phai mờ trong trí nhớ. Mà đã không quên được thì sao có thể tha thứ? Huống chi mẹ vì sự ra đi của anh hai mà trở thành một người hoàn toàn khác.

Tôi lớn lên, bất hòa triền miên với mẹ, đến mức luôn ước giá như ngày xưa mình chết thay anh hai thì nơi được ánh dương chiếu rọi bỏng gắt sẽ có những mảnh đời bình yên hơn nhiều. Tôi bỏ nhà đi từ năm 15 tuổi. Lang thang phiêu bạt cùng những sở thích tự do của mình. Rồi 15 năm trôi qua dưới ngàn triệu bước chân háo hức độc hành của tôi về cuộc sống. Nhanh như một vòng chuyển động của mặt trăng.
Đôi khi trong nhịp sống cô đơn, được báo tin về những con người từng xuất hiện trong quá khứ của mình đã hòa tan thể xác vào cát bụi, tôi chỉ thoáng hồi tưởng. Có nhớ về vài kỷ niệm xưa cũ cũng không khiến bản thân nhói tim thương xót hay chạnh lòng, và tôi cứ thế rầu rĩ về sự vô cảm đáng sợ nơi tâm hồn mình. Ngoài nỗi buồn quá lớn của bản thân, tôi không còn dành tấm lòng được cho bất kỳ chuyện gì.
Trong những năm xa nhà, thỉnh thoảng tôi có về thăm mẹ. Những lần gặp mẹ, niềm vui thì ngắn mà nỗi buồn lại dài hơn. Lần nào bước chân ra khỏi cổng cánh nhà mẹ, hành trang của tôi cũng nặng trĩu ưu phiền, kèm ý nghĩ không bao giờ dại dột quay lại thêm một lần nào nữa. Song những cơn dại dột của tình thâm luôn đột ngột ập đến. Tôi lại trở về để đến cuối cùng ngoài việc dày vò mình bằng mớ kinh nghiệm sai lầm chất chồng lên nhau thì không biết cách nào giúp giải tỏa nỗi bí bách của bản thân. Tự do, không gì níu kéo, tôi lao vào lối sống hoang tàn phóng túng như thiêu thân, mong đốt cháy được sầu muộn và nghĩ hoài đến cái chết nhằm kết thúc tất cả.
Tệ một điều, rất ít người đang quay cuồng đảo điên với cuộc sống mà dự trù được thời điểm lưỡi hái tử thần cận kề ngay cổ. Chết chóc nên là những khoảnh khắc bất chợt thì tốt hơn, bởi những người từng chết hụt đều biết rằng rất đau và ngập đầy hoảng sợ. Tôi không sợ sệt cái chết nhưng vẫn còn biết hãi hùng những va đập thể xác. Thế nên dù thấy đời mình chông chênh, nhạt nhẽo, chẳng có gì đáng giữ, vẫn cố bám lấy cuộc sống bằng thứ cảm giác sâu kín chẳng được gọi tên. Vì so với cái đau xương thịt không thể hình dung, tôi vẫn từng giây đối mặt được với nỗi đau tinh thần.

Không hiểu điều gì đó âm thầm trong tiềm thức đã giữ cho tôi sử dụng cố định một số điện thoại từ khi chạm ngõ công nghệ viễn thông đến tận giờ. Vài đứa bạn ở quê lâu lâu gửi đến những tin nhắn một chiều, gọi là thế vì chẳng bao giờ tôi trả lời một chữ cho đủ nghĩa bạn bè. Thực lòng tôi muốn số người từng quen biết quên đi sự tồn tại của mình. Khi họ quên tôi rồi, tôi sẽ chẳng bao giờ phải mảy may nghĩ suy về họ nữa. Song những tin nhắn ấy không bị xóa đi, chúng nằm trong inbox và tôi rảnh rỗi lại lôi ra đọc. Có tin nhắn kể rằng đứa bạn ấy hay đi ngang qua nhà mẹ tôi, thấy bà buồn thiu, tóc trắng, lưng còng ra vào một mình. Hiểu rằng, tôi ba mươi tuổi cũng là lúc mẹ đã gần sáu lăm. Nếu bà có nhiều con cháu và sống hòa thuận, hẳn rằng sẽ luôn mong chờ những lễ thượng thọ linh đình. Song tiếc thay tôi là một đứa con đại bất hiếu, lại dư thừa quá nhiều ích kỷ để dẹp đi những ảo ảnh sầu não của mình, để có thể lo lắng cho mẹ. Mới hay, từ suy nghĩ đến hành động, có khi xa hơn cả khoảng cách của mây xanh xuống đến đáy địa ngục.
Giữa tôi và mẹ, nếu có thần chết xen vào và đòi lấy đi một trong hai mạng sống, tôi sẽ bám chặt lấy ông ta tình nguyện theo hầu, hoặc van lại ông cứ mạnh tay tống tôi xuống một tầng nào đấy của âm phủ cũng được. Chết trước mẹ, là cách tôi giải thoát cho mình khỏi những oán hận từ sự sinh thành trái ngang.
Một mai kia, ở vùng đất xa xôi nào đó, nếu người ta tìm thấy xác tôi mà không tra nổi nhân thân, sẽ đem chôn như bộ xương vô danh bên suối, hoặc như cô gái khỏa thân chết nơi khúc cua giữa đèo trong ký ức thơ dại của một đứa trẻ sớm biết nhạy cảm để rồi trơ lạnh lúc trưởng thành. Mẹ sẽ nghĩ rằng đứa con bạc phũ của mình đang nhảy nhót hồn nhiên nơi đô hội sô bồ, và tức khí sống thật tốt cho nó biết mặt. Trong trường hợp mẹ ra đi trước, liệu tôi có đủ nhẫn tâm để không quay về lo liệu, và rồi lòng ôm nặng sự hối hận muộn màng suốt quãng đời lay lắt khó tắt phía tương lai?
Tôi hiểu hết các giá trị chân lý ở đời, thậm chí còn vẽ vời được cả những điều thiện mỹ hay ho. Ngôn từ luôn luôn lắt léo, ý nghĩ thì sư sức uốn éo, để đánh lừa những tâm hồn ngây thơ. Có lẽ vì vậy mà tôi đã không chạm đến, sợ mình sẽ quá tay làm rớt tấm rèm nhung lộ ra khoảnh hiện thực phũ phàng. Nên tôi phải cố gắng chết trước mẹ, để giết bằng được thứ suy nghiệm sắc bén quái quỷ trong đầu mình. Đằng nào tâm hồn tôi cũng đã ung nhọt đến mức không thể cứu chữa được nữa.

Chọn một tòa nhà cao tầng, tôi leo lên sân thượng lộng gió và nhìn xuống, đoán định điểm rơi của mình bằng mớ kiến thức toán lý phập phù. Bắt đầu buông mình rơi ngang qua các khung cửa sau những khoảng ban công nhỏ hẹp, tôi nhớ đến câu chuyện “10th floors” mới xem trên mạng. Một cô gái vì những áp lực cuộc sống đã gieo mình từ nóc chung cư 10 tầng xuống đất, ngang qua mỗi tầng lầu, cô ấy phát hiện ra những người sống cùng khu nhà với mình đều có hàng tá bất ổn tệ hại hơn điều mình đang phải chịu đựng. Cho đến khi cô gái chỉ còn là đống máu thịt bẹp dí trên nền bê tông, thì những con người cô ấy nhìn thấy trong quá trình rơi đều chạy xuống xem và tự nhủ rắc rối của họ thật là nhỏ so với kẻ đáng thương vừa tự tử kia.
Tôi muốn chết theo cách của cô gái ấy, để trong khoảnh khắc lìa bỏ cuộc sống, nhận ra mình đã hoàn toàn sai, sai cho đến tận giây phút cuối cùng của đời người quý giá. Hẳn vì chọn cái chết, là bản thân tôi vốn quá rẻ rúng sự sống này.
Tòa nhà tôi gắn với chuyến rơi của mình cao 28 tầng. Lẽ ra theo câu chuyện của cô gái trong “Mười tầng lầu”, tôi sẽ được chứng kiến rất nhiều những cuộc đời tưởng rằng mình bất hạnh, mà tự khổ đau day dứt. Tuy nhiên, có lẽ câu chuyện đó đã lỗi thời, nên thân xác tôi khi bay vun vút qua mấy chục tầng lầu, ngần ấy khung cửa, ngần ấy ban công, cũng chỉ thấy im ỉm bình yên. Như thể dân cư trong tòa nhà này đã rút hết vào phòng kín làm điều bí mật, hoặc khóa cửa rời nhà ra đường tìm kiếm niềm vui. Không một gương mặt nào thò ra giữa không trung, chỉ những vật liệu hiện đại bóng loáng ở lại và vô cảm y như nét kiến tạo trong bản thiết kế. Thế đấy! Mười tầng lầu chỉ là tưởng tượng của những kẻ chưa từng nhảy lầu vẽ ra.

Trong khoảnh khắc tôi chạm đất, âm thanh của cơ thể rơi xuống nền xi mặng bị át đi bởi tiếng hét của vài người. Tôi bất động, nhưng còn 8 phút để cảm nhận từng chuyển di của cuộc sống. Những người gần điểm tôi hạ xác chạy toán loạn né tránh. Sau đó họ đứng từ ra chỉ chỏ bàn tàn. Không ai muốn chạm đến một xác chết vô danh trước khi nhà chức trách đến, giống như tôi từng đứng từ xa nhìn trân trối tai nạn của cậu bé Phong thủa nào. Lao xao tám hướng vài câu nói: “Chắc nhỏ đó thất tình nên nhảy lầu!”, “Ờ, mấy đứa con gái ngoài tình yêu ra thì có gì để tự tử chứ?”, “Khờ quá! Đời này thiếu gì trai mà phải chết vì một thằng”,… Hình ảnh dì Duyên và chị Loan hiện về, cơ mặt lạnh băng, chẳng mở miệng nói lời nào. Nhưng tôi nghĩ có cơ hội sẽ hỏi họ, sao lại chết vì những gã đàn ông nước lã ở đời?
Phút cuối cùng tôi nghĩ đến anh hai. Song không cách gì họa lại gương mặt anh trong tưởng tượng. Đã hơn hai mươi năm trôi qua, tôi giờ đây là một phụ nữ ba mươi, còn anh mãi là một linh hồn trẻ con mười tuổi. Tệ hơn là lúc anh nhắm mắt rời bỏ cuộc sống, tôi còn chẳng được thấy mặt thì tìm gặp nhau thế nào ở cõi âm ty?
